Moving Forward
By Pamela Johnson© 2001
An author was a guest on a radio talk show the week of September 11, 2001.
He made the statement that went something like this- "It is at times like
this that artists rise most often above the tragedy-to bring hope and
perspective.
Noble words, and truthful in fact, but how-from a practical standpoint-does
an artist "move forward" from such a monumental loss if innocence? What
literary contribution could possibly make sense of a horror of cataclysmic
proportions? Perhaps, though therein lies the key. Perhaps there are no
words eloquent enough to describe selfless acts of charity and kindness--of
sacrifice in the face of the death.
A publisher friend said to me, "If each one of us chose one person lost in this tragedy, and lived "our" lives to the fullest in the memory of their potential and of ours, imagine the impact it would have on our country!" So they are my inspiration-along with my faith, and my belief in the people of this country. I have always written about ordinary people stepping up to the plate to overcome extraordinary odds. As an author, I should expect no less of myself. I will pursue all of the potential and possibility that lies within me. And I will remember.
